What an EPS panel is

An EPS panel is a factory-made sandwich: two metal skins bonded to an expanded polystyrene core. It arrives as a single finished unit, so one operation gives you structure, weather skin, insulation and a finished internal face.

Erection is quicker than building up a double skin on site, and there are fewer places for a gap because the assembly was made under factory conditions rather than assembled overhead.

Roof and wall

Roof panels are profiled on the outer skin so water runs off, and lapped so the joint sits above the water line. Wall panels are flat or lightly profiled with a concealed joint, because a wall does not need to drain and a clean face is worth more.

The same panels are widely used for internal partitions and cold room walls, not only for the building envelope.

EPS against PUF

EPS is the more economical core. For the same thickness it insulates less well than polyurethane, so where wall thickness is expensive, as in a cold room where every millimetre is floor area lost, PUF usually wins.

Where thickness is not at a premium, and the requirement is a reasonable thermal break at a sensible price, EPS does the job for less. Partition walls, ambient warehouses and general industrial buildings are the usual cases.

The two also behave differently in fire, and that difference should be checked against the requirement for the building rather than assumed. If fire behaviour is being specified, tell us and we will talk through the options rather than guess.

Handling and fixing

The core is light, which makes panels easy to handle, but the skins are thin and the panel gets its stiffness from the bond between them. A panel dropped on a corner or levered at a joint can delaminate locally, and a delaminated panel has lost the structural action that lets it span.

Joints are where performance is won or lost. A joint pulled up tight and sealed performs; one left slightly open is a continuous thermal bridge and, in a cold application, a condensation line.

Frequently asked questions

Is EPS or PUF better for a cold room?

PUF, in most cases. It insulates better per millimetre, and in a cold room the wall thickness you save is floor area you keep. EPS is the more economical choice where thickness is not at a premium.

Can EPS panels be used for walls and partitions?

Yes, and they commonly are. Wall panels use a flatter skin and a concealed joint because a wall does not need to shed water.

How thick should the panel be?

It follows the temperature you are holding and the difference from outside. Tell us what the space is for and we will advise rather than quoting a default.

What happens if a panel is damaged on site?

Local damage to a skin is usually repairable. Delamination, where the skin separates from the core, is not, because the panel spans by acting as one piece. Handle at the edges and do not lever at joints.
