Measure the plan area of the roof
Measure the length and width of the building at eave level (ground plan). Multiply to get the plan area in square metres. For a 30 m × 20 m building: plan area = 600 m².

Apply the slope factor to get actual roof area
The actual roof surface is larger than the plan area because of the slope. Use the slope factor: slope factor = 1 / cos(pitch angle). Common factors: 5° pitch → 1.004; 10° → 1.015; 15° → 1.035; 20° → 1.064; 30° → 1.155. For a 10° pitch on 600 m² plan area: actual roof area = 600 × 1.015 = 609 m².

Calculate the effective coverage per sheet
Roofing sheets are sold by their overall width, but the effective (net) coverage per sheet is less due to the side lap. Common profiles: Tile 1000 — 1000 mm overall, 950–960 mm effective; Box Profile — 1000 mm overall, 960 mm effective; Hi-Rib — 1000 mm overall, 940 mm effective. For length, sheets are cut to the rafter length plus overhang (typically 75 mm at eave, 150 mm at ridge). Effective area per sheet = effective width × sheet length.

Calculate the number of sheets
Number of sheets = actual roof area ÷ effective area per sheet. Example: actual roof area 609 m², sheet effective width 0.96 m, sheet length 4.0 m (rafter length + overhangs): effective area per sheet = 0.96 × 4.0 = 3.84 m². Sheets required = 609 ÷ 3.84 = 159 sheets (round up to 160).
